My Students
My students are resilient, brilliant youth who have endured unimaginable hardships, yet continue to persevere in order to change their lives. I teach Special Education in a juvenile hall in an urban city. Most of my students live in poverty in public housing projects that are punctuated with violence and trauma. Many of my students are wards of the court or foster students on account of losing their parents.
Upon entering the jail, we learn that many of the students have been shuffled from school to school, or been funneled into the criminal justice system via the school to prison pipeline.
On average, one-half of the students at my school have an Individualized Education Plan due to academic or emotional disabilities.
My students work incredibly hard to improve themselves as people and students while they are locked up. I learn from them each day and have been witness to the possibilities of transformation and rehabilitation.
My Project
My students absolutely love sports, and it turns out that the community loves to challenge my students to play in a pretty awesome after school sports program where they play outside non-profits and organizations.
Sports help our students let go of the stress and anxiety that comes with incarceration; they love working together to play against the community.
Please help me with this project so the students can add dodgeball to the list of sports they play regularly. They told me today that they needed new balls. Thank you, ahead of time, for considering helping with our project. It means so much.
