This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have been working with students for 4 years now, which isn't very long. When I became a teacher, I was ready to create awesome lessons, organize my classroom so that it was inviting, build relationships with my students, and differentiate for their different learning styles.

What I was not ready for is how much time I would spend teaching respect, forgiveness, empathy, grit, determination, desire to succeed, confidence, honesty, integrity and how to love.

My students lacked so many of these skills that it became nearly impossible to try to teach summarizing a nonfiction text or writing an expository essay because no one could work together, no one had the grit to keep going when it got hard and everyone was falling apart...emotionally. So recently I have taken some really big steps back and have committed myself as a teacher to START HERE, with empathy, respect, kindness, and grit.

This is where I need your help. I have compiled a list of ESSENTIAL books to engage my students in conversations about these social and interpersonal skills. These books are going to be the foundation of my lessons and the point of reference as I teach everything else!

My Project

Reading ability is declining in students who are in Title 1 schools. Many of these schools have a heavy focus on testing and forget the importance of reading. Being able to read would give my students the advantage they need.

I want to give back to my students the enjoyment of reading and expose them to diverse books.

I want to use these books as a daily read aloud that will get students talking about reading. I also will use them as mentor text and guided reading!

Before you can teach a child to read, you have to help them love reading.
