My students need BOOKS! I am working on building and expanding our classroom library and my students need copies of Home of the Brave and Small as an Elephant!
My students are kind, generous, and inspiring. They are open to each other's differences and support each other in their learning. They are tolerant that each person has his or her own unique learning needs. For example, when a student began utilizing noise-canceling headphones in class mid year, no one batted an eye. When a student from a different class questioned the headphones during passing time, one of the students in my class simply said, "Loud noises bother him sometimes, so those help." That was it. They are beautiful and considerate children.
Each day my students inspire me to be a better teacher and a better person--so I want to inspire them to become stronger, life-long readers.
They come to school ready to work and ready to grow as readers and writers. I provide all of the resources I can to help them grow. But there are some additional items that will help them take their learning to the next level.
My Project
I selected eight copies of "Home of the Brave" and eight copies of "Small as an Elephant" for my classroom library. This will provide students with an opportunity to access high-interest, high-quality reading material right inside my classroom. What often happens is that I have a single copy of each title and those titles are snapped up quickly. By providing several copies of a single title I will be able to provide access to many students. Further, several students can read the same book simultaneously and form a book club around their reading.
A book club will foster a lifelong love of reading and literacy for my students.
By having an opportunity to read a high-quality book and then to discuss it with friends students will provide motivation and accountability around reading goals.
