I teach 2nd grade in an elementary school nestled in the mountains of far Southwest Virginia. We are a very small school, and we serve an area that has a high number of students living in poverty. Many of their parents are not employed.
I want to provide them with some educational games that teach cooperation to use during the cold months when we cannot have recess outside.
Many students are not exposed to board games at home due to increased technology in homes. I want to give them an opportunity to learn to play cooperatively together
My Project
My students, even at the young age of 7 and 8, are addicted to technology and their devices. They want to spend time on their Chromebooks, tablets, phones, and video game systems.
One of the things I remember most about my childhood is family game nights.
Gone are the days when children played board and card games with their families. Students are not learning the important skills you can get from playing games, such as taking turns, cooperating, and being good winners and losers. I want to reintroduce game play to my students and give them an alternative to electronics.
