My Students

This is my first-year teaching and I love to see my scholars reading independently. My scholars are very diverse with different ethnicities, special needs, and various reading levels. I know most classrooms are but my scholars are a little different. The thought that these scholars have not had a normal school year experience because of COVID-19 is shocking. These scholars have not had the opportunities that they would normally get to experience as second graders.

COVID-19 has impacted my scholars on a whole new level.

Many of my scholars are from low economic families with little if any parental support at home as well as the lack of books at home. For some of these scholars just getting to and staying at school is a success for them. At this age they should be loving school. I try to give them a warm, loving environment for them each day. I love seeing how their mood changes when they come into my classroom in the mornings. That's what is great about books, they’re cozy and inviting. I read to them as much as I can. They have an eagerness to read. I want to continue to impact them through independent reading.

My Project

I want my scholars to fall in love with reading. Second grade is a critical time to capture the love of reading. It’s so important to me that my scholars find something they are interested in while in my class. If I can instill the love of reading in them it will forever change my particular scholars. For the most part my scholars have rough home lives. If I can get them to fall in love with reading, they will have a better chance of being successful in their academic careers as well as wanting to stay in school. I understand they can always go to the library, however, because of the pandemic my class only gets to go to the library once a week and get 1-2 books. Plus, a lot of things are digital these days. I feel that there is no replacing the feeling of holding a book, seeing the pictures up close, and physically turning the page adds to the satisfaction of getting to the end. It creates a bond between the book and the reader. Books online are a great tool, but they can’t replace a good ole fashioned book.

I call my scholars Bookworms when it comes to independent reading.

They love it. I reward them with praise and a gummy worm from my “Bookworm” jar when they read, take an AR test, and pass! A bookworm for my Bookworms. I want more books to expand and create a class library for my Bookworms. I need books to support social, emotional, and well-being of kids. I have scholars that have been virtual and have had a lot of isolation in the past due to the pandemic.
