Bring Apollo Public Affairs Officer to Space Night at DSA!
Help me give my students the opportunity to hear about our Nation's history of sending astronauts to the moon firsthand from Ed Buckbee, the Public Affairs Officer during the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo Space Programs.
My students are very curious and always asking questions. I want to keep that natural inquisitive instinct alive by keeping them engaged with projects that are hands-on and meaningful.
We love to engage in all kinds of STEAM projects!
We pretend to be engineers and scientists on a regular basis. My students learn to be problems solvers and think outside the box through engaging in project-based learning. I want my students to LOVE all aspects of school and be lifelong learners.
My Project
This will be my 14th year organizing a free school wide event called "Space Night". My goal is to increase awareness about space while involving the entire family. Teachers and community members volunteer their time to hold hands-on workshops during this evening. Ed Buckbee, Public Affairs Officer during the 1960s for NASA, will open our Space Night this year with his presentation about working with America's very first astronauts. Students and their families will have the opportunity to see pictures and hear stories firsthand from Mr. Buckbee. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions. Following this presentation, students and their families will go to two different workshops (that they will have previously selected). Some examples of the workshops being offered are: building a make and take stomp rocket launcher, building and launching water bottle rockets, painting the solar system, creating constellations, designing & racing Lunar Rovers, and experimenting with forces of flight.
What better way to learn about "The Space Race" than hear firsthand stories from a man that worked with Wernher von Braun and the original astronauts.
I know he will inspire our students, parents, and teachers to continue to work hard and stretch their limits!
