My students need Scholastic Classroom Magazines to enrich their understanding and learning of nonfiction texts, and to help them make real-world connections to what they are reading!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first grade classroom is made up of about 20-24 amazing and energetic students! We are an extremely diverse classroom and always have a lot to teach one another. My students try their best every day and I try my best to provide them with the best learning environment that I can. My goal is to make sure that they love coming to school, and that they foster a love for learning that will remain with them for the rest of their lives!
We love celebrating our differences and learning about our individual uniqueness!
Our classroom is part of an Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classroom, and students with disabilities who receive Integrated Co-Teaching services are educated with age appropriate peers in the general education classroom. Almost 10% of our students are English language learners and 33% are students with disabilities. Almost half of our students stay in after-school until after 5 PM each day while their parents work. We are also a Title I school on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and all of our students qualify for free or reduced price school lunch. Despite the many challenges my students face, they always come to school and try their best!
My Project
As a Title 1 school, it is critical to do all that we can to help our young learners as they embark on their journey of learning to read. Providing them with different texts, genres, and the use of technology is critical in helping them be successful and engaging them with materials and subject-matter that interests them!
Scholastic Magazines are not only engaging and interactive, but they allow all types of learners and readers to be active participants when using them!
While students receive their very own magazine - fully packed with information on animals, space, the environment, and more - there is also a video and technology component that allows students to listen to the words while reading and see what the magazine is talking about in action with videos! This allows independent readers to read at their own pace, while students who may struggle with reading or learning can rely on the visuals and read-aloud aspect to help them with their understanding.
Having been in the classroom for over 3 years, I have seen just how helpful, interactive, engaging, and fun these magazines are... and how much the kids love and look forward to them!
