Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom is filled with smiles, collaboration, thinking outside the box, academic rigor, and perseverance through failure as a family, using empathy to accomplish our goals and even our dreams. We are a 100% free lunch, Program Improvement, Title I school with an ethnically and linguistically diverse population. Currently, less than 10% of my class is performing on grade level, but we're slowly making progress in the right direction every day; however, that growth is only limited to the school day since the lack of at home intervention knowledge and linguistic barriers hinder my students' academic development.
I dedicate every day to helping my students discover what their legacy in life will be by trying to give them the same opportunities as students in middle/upper class neighborhoods.
My students are dreamers without a visible path to lead them to a successful and productive life. Most of our parents/guardians do not have a high school education, but I am starting to see a genuine desire for them to become more involved in their child's academic pursuit. As a school, we should capitalize on every opportunity to form rapports and relationships with students and parents. This project allows us to do that.
My Project
With a brighter LCD projector, I will be a much more effective teacher to make concepts more accessible to my students. In order to make information comprehensible to my struggling and second language learners, the projector will incorporate colorful and vibrant visuals (images/graphs/videos) that will bring information and stories to life, especially during our science units. The usb drives will allow me to copy worksheets, files, and programs for parents who can then transfer them to their computer to continue the learning at home.
All students deserve the opportunities that are afforded to children in higher socioeconomic status populations, such as informed parents who act as a beacon light to illuminate their young minds and teachers who are willing to foster that growth.
In 17 years, I've observed our community's dependence on others and sheer luck to "save" them from their situation, rather than take it upon themselves and become their own catalyst of change because of a lack of information. If we can build up the knowledge base in my students and the community, it will encourage them to explore and conquer the unknown and unite the school/neighborhood, students, and parents. From there, anything is possible.
