The students at my school are from a rural farm community. We have a small school at the edge of a large corporation. Our students come from all socioeconomic backgrounds. We are lucky to have great families that work hard and are involved in our school events, but we don't get a lot of extra funding from the state. This is due to our school not qualifying as a Title I school. Title I schools have a higher level of free and reduced-price lunches than we currently have.
My sweet kiddos are hard workers, but they have lots of extra energy and thrive during hands-on activities.
We try to keep moving around our classroom several times throughout day to help with this. I also have tried to incorporate a flexible seating environment to keep their little bodies wiggling while engaged in learning while at our seats. We have had a lot of success when we use hands-on manipulatives and activities. I love to provide learning opportunities that will get my students moving, thinking, and stimulating their learning by creating!
My Project
I am excited about this project because items will be used by our whole school! I am asking for a heat press, vinyl, and some tools to help our Student Council promote positive messages about inclusion and diversity throughout the school! The Student Council gives a weekly quote on the Monday Announcements that teachers focus on throughout the week with their class. These lessons focus on the meaning of the quote. They are all focused on kindness, our school-wide theme. These quotes incorporate messages about inclusion and how it is okay to be different. We have a Cricut machine, and we can use the vinyl to design these quotes and place them around our school featuring the positive messages for the kids to see every day and remind them of the important lesson that we are talking about in class. One of my favorites is, "We could learn a lot from crayons, some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, while others are bright, some have weird names, but they all have learned to live together in the same box.", by Robert Fulgham.
The students at my school need to see these positive messages even at their young age, and be able to relate them to their world to truly understand them.
With the added heat press and vinyl, my goal is for each year each classroom can come up with a motto and make their own shirts to promote a true belonging in their classroom. We want everyone to feel special and like a true team member, promoting the idea of the inclusion of everyone! The shirts will serve as a sense of belonging to their classroom! They will know EVERYONE has a place in our school and belong to our school family!
