Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 7th grade math students are solving math problems and then cheering about it when they are finished. We use small laptop computers and a system that shows the results immediately. We are on track to be a standout among 7th grade math classes in the district for math skills and algebra readiness.
My students are a diverse group of 7th graders: 50% Hispanic and a further mix of African American, Polynesian, White and Indian.
Ours is not a wealthy community, but not destitute, either, and characterized by parents who are eager to support their children. This year in particular, we are blessed with an especially good group of 7th graders who are docile and eager to learn and to please. Our school is a smaller middle school, enrolling around 700 7th and 8th graders. The culture at our school is characterized by an eagerness on the part of the students to participate in after school events and activities, and many friendly greetings in the hall. Good kids; a pleasure to work with.
My Project
We are making heavy use of web-based student response software this year in my classroom. I create a virtual classroom and students use Chromebooks to join. I then administer a series of questions and students' responses are collected in real time by the software. Students' education and educational process decisions are driven by results data and this student response program allows students to see their results in real time and see how their score contributes to the score of the class. The results in basic math skills improvement are immediate and dramatic. As well, the standardized testing takes place on computers and these young students, first year out of grammar school, are developing familiarity with data entry and calculation, which will give them a big advantage at testing time.
I am asking for a new, brighter projector with which to provide the feedback to the students during class. Our current projector is old and not very bright.
A new projector will impact the students' experience on a daily basis when the information is presented to them and they can see the information much more clearly.
Immediate feedback motivates the students when we use this mode to learn, and the feedback is given with the projector shining up on the wall of the classroom. With a new, bright projector, students will see their results in vibrant clarity and the room will not need to be dark just so that they can see the screen.
