Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In all my years of teaching, I have never met a group of students quite like this group. They are eager, brilliant, and always ready to jump into whatever I set before them. I want to push these kids harder, drive them further, and see them really soar! You can be part of my mission!
Have you ever met a child who LOVES to read?
I have a room full of them this year! They love fictional stories but have limited skills in working with nonfiction texts. We desperately need quality nonfiction text to read and interact within the classroom!
My classroom is a second home to 21 bright and bubbly third graders. They absolutely love to learn and brighten my day, each and every day with their zest and love for reading. We attend school each day in a low income-low socioeconomic area and have limited resources from which to pull from. Approximately 85% of our school currently receives free or reduced lunches and the majority of our population consists of second language learners.
My Project
Time for Kids magazine is a wonderful resource to use in the classroom! These magazines are packed with nonfiction articles that truly engage the reader and excite them into wanting to learn even more. The text in these magazines is written in a kid-friendly manner, unlike a current textbook. High interest and readability make them a perfect addition to the curriculum.
My students truly deserve these magazines. They work hard, and despite the presence of limited reading skills, they still want to engage with nonfiction texts. Our textbooks are out of date, and difficult to work with in leveled reading groups. Having these texts will allow my students to build their reading fluency, comprehension, and informational background. They will also encourage my reluctant readers to read more about what interests them, developing their overall outlook on reading.
Donations to this project will provide my students with the necessary materials to bridge the learning gap and succeed with the Common Core State Standards.
My students will use these magazines for reading response, classroom research and also as weekly homework assignments. They will help bring my little group of students out of the classroom and into the world!
