My students are dreamers, problem solvers, and likely the most creative little people you will ever meet.
They are a happy group of first graders who love school and love to learn.
One hundred percent of our school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch, yet they don't let hardships stand in their way. My students' economic situations are just as varied as are their family dynamics. We have military families with a local National Guard unit in our area and an Air Force base close by. We aim to take good care of our military families. Our district includes an Indian Reservation and we have a high population of Hispanic students, many of whom have family members who work in the agricultural industry. It is so rewarding to teach, whether I am helping a gifted student learn, one coping with ADHD learn, or anything in between. I feel like I have the best job ever!
My Project
Last year my students were gifted with these awesome "First Grade Rocks" t shirts. Needless to say, they were a hit, well loved and well worn. I would like to have shirts for this class to wear on special days when we visit a near by library, explore the great outdoors or visit a museum. Sometimes they wear them for special programs or activities. We do not have a uniform code, but it is nice to have a shirt they can all wear that is the same. It can help to create uniformity among my students.
When students use manipulatives to create and use representations to organize, record, and communicate their mathematical ideas, they begin to develop a more positive math disposition and take ownership of their own learning.
The light panel will be placed on the student's tables for use during math stations. We already have addition, patterning, and sorting trays and manipulatives to use with the panel. The timers will be used by students to keep track of their time and move on to the next activity. Having these materials will make for a great start in first grade.
