Bright and Colorful Visual Aids to Support Language and Learning
My students need access to high quality visual aids to support their comprehension of language, academic concepts, and vital self-help skills, and a color printer will make those images more interesting and engaging for them.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach a specialized population of unique learners who are deaf or hard of hearing. As an itinerant teacher, I travel around Washington, DC, working with each child to meet his or her individual needs at the student's home school. My students live and attend school in all parts of the city and come from a wide range of cultural, language, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
My students are an amazing and diverse group of kids who are excited to be at school and motivated to communicate with their friends and teachers.
However, their language delays require specialized instruction and additional supports to help them become effective communicators and build meaningful relationships with their peers and teachers.
My Project
My student population consists of children with varying levels of hearing loss, some of whom have multiple disabilities or are also English Language Learners. A child with a language delay or language barrier has greater access to information when it is presented in a visual format such as a photo to help them comprehend a new vocabulary word, an illustration to help them understand a scenario or concept, or a visual schedule to help them become independent learners.
Though my kids have a wide range of individual needs, the common factor is that they each greatly benefit from access to high-interest visual aids to support their growth in both language and life skills.
This color printer with related supplies will allow me as their teacher to create individualized visual aids that are both engaging and highly relevant to each individual student.
