Can you imagine going to school everyday and finding EVERYTHING hard? Figuring out words is hard. Understanding math is hard. Even dealing with the frustration is hard. That's what it is like for my students, because learning disabilities don't take holidays.
I work with an amazing group of young learners who want to know MORE.
They want to more about dinosaurs, and space, and animals, and each other. The 10 kindergartners and first graders in my class have special needs, including learning disabilities and autism, but that does not slow them down.
My students are thoughtful, and motivated to learn, but the curriculum is challenging for them. They learn differently than other kids and need extra support. They love books, but cannot read them themselves. They like math as long as it is concrete. They LOVE using science and technology, but really don't know how. They can play Minecraft, but have never had the access, instruction, or the opportunity to practice 21st century skills.
My Project
I am requesting a 2 iPads with cases and a charging station to help my students successfully bridge the cavern between where they are, and where they want to be.
My students, even those who are just beginning to learn their letters or sound out simple words, will be able to access the books their peers in general education classes are reading.
The iPads will also be used to access virtual math manipulatives, video tutorials, and targeted skills practice across the content areas. And because the virtual world is not enough, I am also requesting highly engaging manipulatives and building toys to strengthen fine motor, spatial, and literacy skills.
