I am an energetic second grade teacher at an Equity+ school in Charlotte, North Carolina. I teach seventeen students who are passionate about learning and always look forward to the next discussion or the next project. Each day I try to overcome each of their educational barriers by encouraging them to always be the best they can be despite their circumstances. Although they have the inner strength to put forth their all, they are still faced with a lack of resources to help make their educational experience come alive. Bridging the Gap will allow me to provide each of my students with hands on experiences in reading, writing, word work, and listening through ready-to-go learning centers. Each center comes complete with all the materials and supplies needed to teach students a host of skills in a hands-on engaging way. Additionally, Bridging the Gap will allow me to meet the diverse learning needs and styles of each of my students, which will provide each of them with a high rate of success. Students will visit each of the centers on a daily basis in groups of four for thirty minutes. Each group will focus on a specific skill and will complete the activity that is outlined in the center. After students have completed the activity, they will be allowed to have free time in the center to review or explore something new. In conclusion, my students will benefit tremendously from having ready to go hands on centers in the classroom. Bridging the Gap will allow my students to gain confidence about learning and will encourage them to master and explore new concepts. Many of my students don't have the resources at home to bring clarity to things they learn in school so the centers will be an excellent way for them to extend upon concepts learned during whole group instruction. In addition, much of what they complete during whole group instruction is pencil paper type activities and the instant learning centers will provide reinforcement in a hands-on format.
