Help me give my students, who are exceptional learners, an iPad and tablets so that they can access online educational programs that will assist them with achieving their IEP goals.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My classroom consists of students who are impacted by exceptionalities which include emotional behavioral disorder, specific learning disability, autism, traumatic brain injury, and other health impairments. Like many children in South Atlanta, my students face a seemingly overwhelming economic challenge which is evident by the fact that 100% of the students at my school receive free breakfast and lunch.
Because of their exceptionalities coupled with their environment, my students are typically expected to perform poorly academically.
Though they love learning, they perform significantly below their grade-level. Research has shown that by the time my students reach high school, problems that began in the early grades may reach a point of no return.
I want to bridge the gap that exists. My students are enthusiastic about learning and enjoy using technology and manipulatives much of which is not readily available to them. I believe that if they receive proper support along the way, they are capable of graduating from high school with a traditional diploma fully prepared to attend college. I am privileged to have such an amazing group, and I want to help them achieve their fullest potential.
My students enjoy my lessons more when I use technology because they find them to be captivating and engaging. I have come to realize that my students perform better when lessons are integrated with technology. The tablets will be used daily to access digital programs that will help them improve their basic skills using remediation drills.
The accessibility to kind of technology will lead to a paradigm shift for students with learning disabilities.
My students will be able to use the iPad to to access educational applications that are not available on windows or Chromebooks. The equipment will make lesson more engaging, interactive and will cater to the learning styles of most students.
