Bridging the Gap to Effective Literacy Instruction.
My students need language learning centers, sight word stamps, leveled readers, and literacy centers related to the Common Core in order to learn how to read better.
I work in an urban school district with a high population of at-risk students. This is a co-taught classroom with 10 special education students and 14 regular education students who have been identified as at-risk learners and in need of specialized and differentiated instruction.
The students in my classroom are poverty stricken children, most of them live in single parent working homes.
This makes reinforcement of literacy concepts difficult. Our school has been making steady progress to increase test scores, however, it is difficult to meet the needs of students with budgets for classroom materials have decreased significantly. We are in need of meaningful literacy materials and learning centers so we can get our parents more involved and excite our students to want to read more. This will help the students feel the confidence they need to be successful.
My Project
The materials I have requested will help enhance our classroom instruction. Every student will be able to have access to books. Multi-sensory instructional objectives can be met and students can have the ability to participate more effectively in class activities. With our large class size, many students have to share or wait a day to experience the center. This makes exposure to literacy content in the classroom limited.
This project is so important to me because I believe that all students, regardless of race or poverty, deserve the right to good instructional materials to supplement the great teaching they receive.
It will create greater independence for all of our learners and make them successful from the beginning of their school experience. I want my students to love their school and not have to fight for books or materials. They all have a quest for knowledge and should get a fair chance at learning.
