As the media specialist at Stratford, a high school in Berkeley County with a student body of approximately 2800 students, I have seen firsthand the importance of students having access to quality contemporary literature. Since 1980, the South Carolina Association of School Librarians (SCASL)has sponsored the South Carolina Young Adult Book Award (YABA)reading program. Through this program students are given the opportunity to read 20 nominated titles selected by the SCASL Book Committee and vote on their favorite. For the first time, our media center is participating in the YABA program. When we decided to host the events for the YABA books, we wanted to wow our students and have a reading program that they all would want to participate in. Our Media Center Advisory Board worked on spreading the news to our faculty as the media specialists went to work involving our students. Primarily through our media center orientation, students learned about the program, the prizes, and the fun they would have reading the YABA books. The response has been overwhelming! The 80 copies we have are in constant circulation. Unfortunately we discovered "gaps" in our plan to provide materials to ALL of our students. We simply do not have enough YABA books for our school; therefore, we would like an additional copy of each of the 2005-2006 YABA books. At the same time we realized that we needed to provide our Spanish speaking population and our learning disabled students with the same wonderful opportunity. Why not provide the YABA books in Spanish and also on CD or cassettes for these special need students? After all, we want every student to be able to participate in the voting and festivities. In addition to the 20 YABA books, we need the available YABA titles in Spanish and on CD or cassette. Having these materials will allow our diverse population to gain the benefits of reading. Giving the students the opportunity to have their voices heard in voting on the award winning book shows them that their opinion counts. By participating in a celebration lunch and winning prizes, our students will also learn that reading is fun and fundamental. Our goal as media specialists is to help create lifelong learners and readers. Having all our students participate in YABA is a great way to "bridge the gap."
