Our fifth grade community is comprised of diverse learners from unique cultural and economic backgrounds. These students possess a genuine intrinsic drive to accomplishing learning goals and succeed in life. Each day, they approach our learning targets with a renewed energy that serves as an inspiration for both peer and faculty. As a Title 1 school, our diverse demographics often presents challenges that are beyond the students control. Regardless to the difficulties surmounting them, our fifth grade community has made tremendous academic gains over the course of the present school year.
The core motivating factor for these students is the sheer possibility of creating a future life that is positively different from the one they currently have.
Our fifth grade community works diligently to grow in their content skills and they actively engage in opportunities to explore real-life application of those skills. This year, our students have developed a new passion for literacy and are engaged in both project-based learning activities and extensive writing.
My Project
My students need are in need of over 20 novels for our classroom library, including Matilda, Frindle, Esperanza Rising and Let the Children March. As our fifth grade community continues to develop its passion for literacy, our need for a solid classroom library has increased. Though our students desire to engage in more intense and regular reading, they have grown dissatisfied with the current volume of books available in our school library.
This collection of novels and biographies will serve as a ready pool of interesting and comprehensive literature for students to access within the classroom.
This will also remedy constant accessibility issues with our school media center/library. Students will utilize the classroom library daily, during homeroom period and after finishing assignments and projects, as well as with our Accelerated Reader program.
