Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are 21st-century millennials who are learning how to be scholarly despite the hurdles they have to face: low socio-economic status, 91% free and reduced-price lunch, 97% English Learners, single parents, and rough neighborhoods.
In order to be college and career ready, my students need opportunities to grow in their critical thinking skills through technology, art, and physical movement.
In our classroom, students are learning how to incorporate technology, art, and presentations as culminating activities. As a school, we are educating the whole child to be physically active and make healthy choices.
My Project
Currently, my students, who are 98% Hispanics, are enjoying and embracing different cultures through literature. We are learning about Chinese immigrants who worked on the railroad system and mined for gold, how paper cranes gave hope to a Japanese girl who suffered from leukemia during World War II, and understand the different writing system from other cultures.
It would be an awesome experience for my students to incorporate Chinese jump ropes into their PE activity, make paper cranes with origami paper, and use calligraphy pens to understand the art of writing.
Also, as part of our kindness act, my students will create several 100 paper cranes as a sign of good luck and donate them to children who are sick.
