Every day students from 6th, 7th and 8th grade enter my classroom with smiles on their faces. They come in ready to experience something new and exciting. Each student has the possibility to create something completely unique that fits his or her personal interests and experiences.
The school district has a wide variety of students of different social and economic backgrounds.
The majority of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch though. Most students come to school without the basic necessities needed to learn. Art is an escape for many of the students who aren't very successful in core curriculum classes. Trying to meet the needs of a 120+ students on a daily basis requires me to think outside the box to reach their individual needs. I also work with many students with physical and mental disabilities. Inspiring a love of art and keeping kids engaged is one of my top priorities.
My Project
If I can get an iPad Air 2 in my classroom students will be able to use it so they can search the internet for inspiration when creating original works of art. They will also be able to use the iPad to download the many creative apps offered on the app-store, such as Auryn Ink, Omnisketch, and Drawing Desk. Technology in the classroom would allow students to experience art in a different medium. This would help bridge the gap between fine art and digital design.
Students of this generation love using technology, and they work really well with it.
Providing students with new technology in the classroom will allow them to put their skills and interest to use in a productive and creative way. Even my most reluctant students will be more engaged in our various projects throughout the year.
