Bridges to Geometry

Help us bridge the gap! My high school special education Geometry classes mirror the regular education classrooms. I teach smaller groups of students in which I try to make connections between the state standards and the world outside our classroom.

Eighty percent of the students in my school receive free or reduced lunch. But there is no poverty of spirit. Most of my students are kinesthetic learners. They learn by doing.

Digital cameras will help my students focus on the geometric concepts around them. To start, students will simply look for the right angles in their environment, and take pictures of what they notice. It is my hope that we will then branch out into the community: Each student will be responsible for photographing one of the many bridges in our city. They will then print the photo and present the geometric concepts, such as supplementary angles, transversals, and the polygons they see,to the rest of the class.
