I am an 8th Grade Social Studies teacher employed at a Title I School with a family median income of $12,000 with 90% of the students on free and reduced lunch. Our school is the highest impoverished school in our district with a state poverty index of 92.72. Two of our most serious problems are the lack of parental involvement and student motivation. As a school, we have recognized these deficits as our most serious liabilities.
We believe that home visits would let parents realize that we need them as partners in their child's education, and that it would motivate students towards doing their best on their return to school. We would like to conduct these home visits over the course of the summer, making parents and students feel comfortable and free to visit the school at anytime. We want to provide a "welcome pack" that would include the following: one summer reading book required for the student's grade level, information regarding mental health resources, Hispanic contacts, tutorials on outside agencies that will provide aide and assistance such as the Sylvan Learning Center, school supplies for next year, nutritional guides, school calendar of events, one small candle, and a welcome letter describing what the student should expect during their 8th grade year. We would like to include two surveys--one for the parent and one for the student--given verbally. We will personally offer an invitation for the parent to become involved and inform them as to the many areas in which they can volunteer.
As a result of our home visit to every prospective 8th grade student, we hope to see an increase in parental involvement and student motivation.
