This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our class is different from most. Rules are relaxed and students freely come and go from general education classes. On a typical day you might see one student working on a history project, another completing part of his portfolio, and another sawing wood, sanding and painting.
My students come to me varying degrees of disabilities.
Home, for many of them is not a good place. These students deal with more than most of us can or are willing to imagine. Not only do they struggle emotionally or cognitively, they struggle financially. Some are more needy than others but all are needy. Still, they are teenagers and more than anything they want to be accepted. In my room they are safe. They are free to express themselves without fear of ridicule.
My Project
The art supplies will be used to create original works of art. The students will not only produce art but create a source of personal pride. We will use the arts and crafts room to teach and reinforce such skills as responsibility, producing quality work and following directives. Each student will be able to make and display their works throughout the school and community.
Donations will help provide these special need, low-income students with a creative outlet.
This is an outlet many of them have had limited opportunity to explore. It is my hope they will be able to take them lesson learned through art and apply them to adult life.
