I am a 5th-grade teacher in a small, rural middle school where the majority of our students come from hard-working families. We are a Title 1 school which means that we have a large number of students coming from low-income homes. My students love learning and work very hard. In our classroom, we are a family. The culture that we create, encourages empathy for others, tolerance, taking learning risks, and embracing the uniqueness of who we are as individuals. Because of this, my students give their all to themselves and each other every day! My classroom is a place that makes you look forward to going to and it is all because of the students that are in it!
My Project
I have struggled with helping those kids with large reading gaps. In middle school, we do not have the reading resources needed to support struggling readers. If they are going to read to learn, we must first make sure they learn to read. I want engaging leveled readers to help bridge this gap without making them feel embarrassed about having the gap to begin with. Reading is an exercise for the mind. It helps kids calm down and relax, opening doors of new knowledge to enlighten their minds. Kids who read grow up to have better cognitive skills.
