My class this year will consist of approximately 25 Grade 1 students. My students live in one of the most resource-challenged districts in one of the richest states in the US. All of my students have the option to receive free lunch and breakfast. We are surrounded by some of the wealthiest towns in Connecticut, yet we struggle with large class sizes, enough basic supplies, and equitable access to technology. My students, and their parents, expect that every day our students are receiving an education equal to those of students in surrounding towns. Our students come from all over the world and their parents would love the opportunity to share the joy of learning with their children. My students share the same thirst for knowledge and their eyes light up the same when they finally understand the concept being taught.
COVID-19 challenged us to engage students at home and in our classroom.
This project will bring much needed resources to the students both in the classroom and at their homes.
My Project
As a 1st grade teacher, I use all types of hands-on materials to help my students build words. The students need to see how the manipulating of letters changes the word. The students get so excited when they make words that rhyme and read many words for the first time.
As my 1st graders know they will become readers, they are eager to start this exciting year and will appreciate these hands on word work manipulatives.
Using both the flipbook and the letter tiles at home and at school will insure that as students work at school, the students at home also can manipulate the words in the same way. We all walk together over the bridge in a fun engaged way with our phonics manipulatives.
