My students need Brick Math, an engaging program by Dr. Shirley Disseler, that uses Legos to help all students at all levels "see" and solve complex problems that they will face in 5th grade and beyond.
Boisterous boys and creative girls who all love technology, science, history, and engineering fill my classroom every day. My students are sweet and intelligent and are always willing to try new lessons. They do not enjoy Charlie Brown style lectures nor do they like sitting around all day doing worksheets. These are hands-on movers and shakers who really don't complain too much about having to be at school or working hard.
These kiddos amaze me everyday.
They make discoveries, test ideas, and teach me new things each day. There's never a dull moment because these students are full of personality and all have unique gifts and talents that make our classroom a great place to learn and explore new ideas.
Having said all of this, our school is in a very rural area and we often lack the resources our children need. Technology and hands-on materials are especially needed to engage our active boys, help our struggling learners and enrich our high achievers.
My Project
There is nothing like that moment when the lightbulb goes off in a student's mind. The Brick Math teaching guides along with the Legos will allow students to gain access to The Brick Math program through the use of student brick kits. These kits will allow students at all levels to have "lightbulb" moments while studying tough 5th grade concepts. Dr. Disseler says, "There’s no such thing as a student who is bad at math. They just need to be taught using techniques that are good for teaching.” Her techniques are good for teaching!
I was able to experience these math lessons myself at a workshop and math came alive for me!
I was able to "see" and manipulate solutions for some very tough problems, especially fractions. I saw concepts in an out-of-the-box, hands-on way that I know students will LOVE!
