My students are all fantastic young adults who happen to have intellectual disabilities. They are part of our school district's 18-21 transition program where they learn and practice skills needed for independent living and paid employment. This transition program is located off-site from our district's high school in an apartment-like setting. It is completely hands-on and designed to meet each student's individual goals.
Every student is eager to become as independent as possible.
Students' schedules are split between the transition apartment and the community. While in the apartment, students work on skills related to independent living, such as cooking, cleaning, daily living, communication and money management. While in the community, students have the opportunity to volunteer, complete work experiences, job shadow, tour businesses, and learn how to navigate the community. Community awareness/safety, city transportation, social and leisure skills are also areas of focus.
My Project
My students run a coffee business from the transition apartment. They make and serve lattes, tea and coffee to staff members in the attached building. Students are involved in every aspect of this business, including marketing, sales and customer relations.
Students are interested in expanding their business to other schools within the district on a rotating schedule.
This will require students to have additional coffee gear, as well as the necessary equipment for transport from school to school.
Since starting this small coffee business last year, I have seen an increase in confidence in all of my students. Students have improved social, communication and money management skills. They have built rapport with their customers. They have learned what it is like to have "coworkers." Students take pride in being a part of this business.
The products I have selected will help my students to grow their business, allowing for more opportunities for hands-on learning, as it relates to employment and independent living.
