Our school has the highest percentage of students living within the bounds of poverty of any non-tribal elementary school district in the entire state of North Dakota. Despite the many other things that may be on their minds, we work hard each day to make sure that our students have a safe space to learn and be themselves.
As a special education teacher, my goal is to make my classroom feel like home to my students.
I want them to come to school every day feeling like they belong and are a part of a family. My classroom will be a community of learners that work together to accomplish their goals and dreams. I want my classroom environment to feel bright, energetic, encouraging, and safe.
My students are of middle school age and have both emotional and cognitive impairments. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch through title one support. Despite their hardships in life, my students are eager to learn and grow as individuals. They are excited about learning and accomplishing their goals. I am honored that I get to help my students reach their full potential.
My Project
My students experienced great success last year when they began a staff coffee shop called Cool Beans Coffee! We already have Keurig machines, but in order to keep our business going and to expand the students financial literacy knowledge, we need supplies and inventory. These materials - including travel mugs, a second Keurig, coffee, aprons, a tip jar, a cash box, and sweeteners and creamers - will give our students the essential skills to work an independent job in the school community.
This project will give my students the opportunity to learn more about life skills and practice building their financial literacy.
These are integral skills that my students will use everyday for years to come. These resources will be used on Friday when we deliver coffee to staff. We prep and inventory the orders together. We will be able to use the cash box and tip jar to work on counting coins and understanding the value of money. The students will then help me to balance the budget and decide what our money should go towards. My students need a hands-on approach when it comes to learning difficult concepts in regards to financial literacy, and these materials give my students that chance! I can't wait to see how these materials give my students the opportunity to succeed!
Each step of filling the coffee orders will be the responsibility of one student. Every student will learn each step in a rotating order: processing the order via Google forms, making the coffee, adding extra ingredients, and delivering the coffee to teachers. This coffee business truly helps my students learn integral life skills and money skills. We would love your support!
