Help me give my students items needed to start a coffee cart - cups, llids, stirrers, creamer, sweetener, a coffee pot, carafes, and of course... coffee and a cart.
As an elementary, school-based, speech-language pathologist, I work with students in preschool - fifth grade classes. The students are diagnosed with Autism, Down syndrome, Speech and Language Delays, Intellectual Disabilities, and Developmental Delays. Many of my students are nonverbal or minimally verbal and use technology, manual communication boards, and pictures to make their wants and needs known.
My students inspire me every single day with how hard they work to achieve something most people take for granted, communication at even the most basic level.
My Project
Our school district's motto is "Preparing Students for Life". Under my supervision, my students will start and run a school-wide weekly coffee cart! My students within the Access Points classes (students with a variety of intellectual and developmental disabilities), along with some general education peers who receive speech and/or language therapy, need opportunities to learn vital life skills which are sadly lacking from the current curriculum. This coffee cart will afford them the opportunity to learn financial literacy/money management, communication/interpersonal skills, and basic food management skills with the goal of preparing them for life beyond their school-age years.
Having these skills directly impacts my students' ability to attain and maintain a job once they graduate high school - as well as maximizing their potential for independence.
Despite their challenges, many of my students are aware of their difficulty interacting with peers and unfamiliar adults. This is especially true for students struggling to accurately produce sounds who are often shy and afraid to put themselves out there in today's world. Allowing students in the Access Points classes to work alongside peer buddies will foster communication skills, help develop and/or grow confidence, as well as facilitate friendships!
