My Students
Our students are resilient, diverse and energetic kiddos. From students with special needs to students who have experienced different levels of trauma, to students in need of alternative learning methods, my students continue to show up, ready to push forward despite challenges they've experienced. Our students love to be out in nature, exploring, playing, and learning together.

Despite the many challenges that come from living in the community, such as violence, drugs, gangs, and incarceration, my students need ways to help them to cope and heal. This year, we will be focusing on teaching Social and Emotional skills to all students to ensure they are equipped with the tools they need to be successful.
My Project
These materials will be used in our classrooms to ensure our students are learning how to understand and express their emotions in a safe and healthy way. We are creating our first ever "Amygdala Reset Room," which will be a space for students to spend time choosing from different centers based on what they feel they need to self-soothe. Students might visit the Mindfulness and Yoga corner and learn some breathing techniques with a breathing ball or meditate on a cushion. They might choose the "Kinesthetic Korner," and use puzzles, legos and more to express creativity by building something that resonates with them. Soothing nature sounds, glowing lights, and aromatherapy oils will all be used to activate their senses.
We are teaching self-awareness and self-regulation with the goal that students will have tools to communicate their feelings and breathe through challenges.
The yoga blocks add support and stability for students to get into yoga poses. The yoga straps help kids to build flexibility and release tension in their bodies. The active yoga activity blocks are a self-guided game where students benefit from strength building exercises while working on balance and focus. These items will help students build the skill sets necessary to cope with their environments while reinforcing their abilities to self-regulate. We want to give our students choice and autonomy so that when they leave school, they can use the resources they learned while they were here!
