Despite differences in background, education, or economic status, all parents want the same thing for their children. Parents want their children to have a limitless future filled with choices. However, some parents are better resourced than others to assist their children in achieving those goals. This includes teaching children techniques and strategies that reduce stress and calm tense situations.
Over the last two years, there has been a heavy focus in our district on incorporating social and emotional learning throughout the day.
These lessons are explicitly taught in the morning. When opportunities present themselves throughout the day, teachers and students can put into practice what they have learned.
What we have learned as educators is that our students need an abundance of tools to include in their conflict resolution toolboxes. Not only do the students need explicit lessons and coaching in how to handle situations, they also need to become more aware of their own presence and responsibility in all situations.
There is promising research that demonstrates that daily meditation or yoga can assist children in decreasing negative behavior and increasing academic achievement. In lieu of detention, some schools are using meditation. Although there has been improvement in the number of students who are referred for negative behavior, there are still times during which our scholars have difficulty being mindful of their actions and words. This is even more true of students who have processing or communication deficits such as the ones I serve.
Yoga is not only a great tool to help in teaching social emotional learning, but it is also a way for children to become more physically fit.
Through yoga, children can create stronger bodies. Your donation towards yoga mats will help us to implement mindfulness in our curriculum through the practice of yoga and meditation.
Through learning yoga poses and meditation techniques, we will be able to increase scholars' self-awareness and help them find more positive outlets when they are experiencing frustration and stress. Yoga will help students learn balance and focus which is helpful in every other sport they may learn in physical education classes.
