Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a child-parent center that uses the Reggio approach, which recognizes the individual, social, and legal rights of all children as learners. Our center also puts an emphasis on building deep relationships with parents by involving them in the classrooms and providing them with resources to empower families.
We provide much-needed services to a diverse, high-need community.
Many of our students come from low-income households and over three-quarters are English Learners.
As a bilingual counselor, I provide individual and group support for both parents and students on a daily basis. My vision is to offer yoga and wellness services to an entire school community that is facing many barriers, such as shootings and gang activity. Even with the trauma facing our families and children, they continue to remain resilient and dedicated to seeking social-emotional support at our center. I truly believe this training will open doors for growth in our school community. I am also excited to bring the practice to our staff as we can not take care of others if we are not first taking care of ourselves.
My Project
The Breathe for Change's mission is to "Change the World One Teacher at a Time." The entire training program is designed specifically for educators in order to foster positivity, wellness, and community connection. By bringing yoga to our center, I will be able to offer mindfulness and yoga to each of our classrooms.
Students will be taught breathing techniques and yoga stretches that could translate into lifelong practice.
Furthermore, there is a lot of trauma and community violence occurring outside of our school, which continually affects what goes on in the school. Therefore, it is important for the yoga practice to also extend beyond the classroom and into the school community and the households my students reside in. A goal of mine is to offer yoga sessions each week for parents in hopes of facilitating family well-being and improving family engagement. I would additionally extend my practice to staff by offering weekly yoga sessions before and/or after school. Hopefully, this will have a domino effect philosophy, by improving the well-being of the educator we can improve the well-being of students, staff, families, and the community as a whole.
