Breathe for Change: Promoting Social Justice Through Yoga and Mindfulness
I need to participate in the Breathe for Change yoga, mindfulness and social emotional learning training so that I can support my students as they strive to be their best selves.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach 6th grade English in an inclusion setting in a Boston Public School. My students are a diverse group of learners who come from countries around the world. Many are first or second generation immigrants. Some are English learners or have learning disabilities. Most receive free or reduced lunches.
My students are curious and creative young scholars.
They are always eager to take on new challenges and push their thinking. They would benefit greatly from having more resources and tools to push their learning forward!
My Project
The Breathe for Change training will make me a better educator, as well as give me the ability to promote wellness in my students. According to the curriculum overview, this training will create "increased well-being for educators", "enhanced classroom learning environments," and promote "positive school community culture."
Through social emotional learning practices, I will be able to help my resilient and talented students navigate challenges they may face in order to lead happy, healthy, and successful lives.
Through our advisory program, as well as regular class time, I hope to promote aspects of wellness and inspire students to share what they've learned with their community.
