My students are in their first year of middle school, which includes grades 6-8, and are new to navigating life that includes more freedom along with more responsibility. Learners come to school excited to learn even with outside obstacles. Students are from unique backgrounds with different needs, but still show up with a smile on to learn.
Students love to learn ways that are both engaging and applicable to their life!
21st Century Skills are a foundation of classroom instruction that teach learners what they need to know and be able to do. In addition to learning lifelong skills that students are expected to use within a variety of subjects, and for my class more specifically, this includes ancient civilizations, learners are tasked with the challenge of blending both skills and knowledge together.
My Project
Students recently completed their first Breakout challenge (using borrowed materials) and LOVED it! Breakouts allow students to practice 21st Century skills such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity. All of the sought for supplies will provide learners with a chance to solve puzzles related to the content that we are studying. The requested materials include a variety of locks, boxes as well as invisible ink and black light for four complete kits. This will allow learners to collaborate in smaller teams to really be immersed within this active learning experience.
Every student said they wanted to do a 'Breakout' again and when I saw such engagement, I knew I had to try to get my own kits using DonorsChoose!
One student shared that he loved the activity as all students were engaged; I couldn't agree more! I hope to be able to continue to engage my students in 21st Century skills practice as well as opportunities to learn and demonstrate their content knowledge.
With funding, my students will be able to be more engaged in the learning process as well as learn and refine their skills in a fun and relaxed setting. I know my students will greatly appreciate your generosity, thank you so much for considering!
