Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Math Warriors love puzzles. Often with math, students will only work the bits that they know and will not try to work through the parts that seem to be harder. However, when presented as a puzzle, my Math Warriors will practice persistence. They will often use phrases like “I almost have this.” as opposed to “I don’t get this.”
Puzzles make learning more fun while still practicing the necessary content skills.
Algebra is often a big puzzle. With breakout boxes I can break down the different Algebraic concepts and have my Math Warriors work through each piece of the Algebraic puzzle. They will collaborate with their teammates to solve each puzzle, and unlock each part of the breakout box. My Math Warriors will practice the growth mindset idea of persistence as well. They will also see that Algebra can be fun.
By the end of the school year, my Math Warriors will even create their own breakout box puzzles to use with each other. They will be able to show off the skills they have learned while challenging their classmates.
My Project
These materials will help us to create breakout boxes for my Math Warriors to practice their Algebra skills. After finding a series of slopes, my Math Warriors will then classify the slopes by their steepness to reveal the lock’s secret code. After writing the vertex form of a parabolic equation, my Math Warriors will match the equations to the equivalent standard equation forms. My Math Warriors will be able to collaborate with each other to solve the Algebra puzzles. Ultimately, my Math Warriors will be able to create their own puzzles to challenge their fellow Math Warriors.
Working together, my Math Warriors will breakout their Algebra skills and the prizes!
In addition to making learning Algebra more fun, these breakout boxes will also help my Math Warriors practice persistence and teamwork. The breakout boxes can also be used after school during Algebra tutoring for those Math Warriors that missed the activity in class.
