My students need to become active in learning. Students will have to solve clues to 'breakout' various items they want such as an answer key, iPads, etc. This makes learning engaging and fun.
I teach in a low-income school system. In January of 2017 I was given the opportunity to teach STEM/makerspace full time. Students were excited and frustrated with the concept. They loved the new information and activities, but struggled to complete tasks that answers were not given. They wanted step by step instructions as they are usually given in order to get 'the right answer.' Students are given a task, materials, and then are expected to brainstorm and work together to find a way to solve the problem.
Most students never thought about a profession or connected learning to their current schooling, but now students dream to be architects, engineers, broadcasters, doctors, etc all from exposure to STEM concepts and ideas.
Students strive to do better in order to learn and explore with STEM concepts. Students minds are changing and opening to new ideas and STEM concepts. They see a reason for learning and find enjoyment in it at the same time.
I have been given the opportunity to work with teachers and coteach in classrooms with a STEM focus. Teachers and students in our school are excited to implement new ideas and concepts.
My Project
Students will use the locks and lockboxes to be active in their learning. An item will be locked up in a lockbox that students want. It could be anything like a key to the iPad cart/jump ropes or items for recess/etc, answer key to their next paper (clues would cover same material), etc. Students will have to solve clues in order to unlock the final lockbox.
Students need to feel the material matters to them.
There could be endless possibilities with a variety of locks/lockboxes. We could create a kit for all teachers in our school to use. I will start by introducing this concept into the STEM classroom. I will partner with other teachers to coteach with these materials in the general classroom. Breakout of Traditional Classrooms project will allow for students to have fun learning. This project could provide materials for years to come and multiple classrooms within our building.
