I have a classroom of 5th grade self-contained gifted and talented students in the largest inner-city school district in Ohio. My students are part of our district's academically gifted and talented program. My classroom is diverse with students coming from all parts of the district.
Students learn best when instruction and learning match their learning style.
My students love to learn in different, creative and innovative ways. They yearn for problem solving and the ability to think outside the box. Finally, they want more opportunities to learn how to work together.
My Project
With this Breakout EDU kit, my classroom will turn into an academically focused escape room featuring educational games in which students use teamwork and critical thinking to solve a series of challenging puzzles in order to open the locked box.
This Breakout EDU kit will provide students with many opportunities to learn how to fail; which will enable them to try a different strategy to solve the puzzle and therefore learn how to problem solve along with the content.
In addition to the content knowledge needed to succeed in a specific game, all Breakout EDU games require critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication. These Breakout kits will allow my students to have valuable STEM experiences with teamwork, problem-solving, critical thinking, and troubleshooting by presenting them with challenges that ignite their natural drive to problem-solve. Breakout EDU games will transfer the ownership of learning from the teacher to the students, making it easy to observe how they approach problem-solving and apply their knowledge.
Each kit comes with a large Breakout EDU box, a smaller lockable box, a blue hasp, a key lock, an Alphabet Multilock, a Directional Multilock, Color Mulitlock Wheels, Shape Multilock Wheels, Number Multilock Wheels, a red lens viewer, a deck of Reflection Cards, a 4-digit lock, a 3-digit lock, a UV flash light, 2 Hint Cards, a USB drive, and an invisible ink pen. This kit also comes with access to the Breakout EDU platform with 100+ Subject Pack games and the Breakout EDU Digital Game Creator. My students and I will even be able to create their own Breakout games, which will bring a whole new layer to the challenge my students will encounter.
