My students need toolboxes, UV lights, and an assortment of locks to make breakout boxes to that we can participate in breakout challenge activities that will encourage cooperative problem-solving and leadership.
My students come from an urban area just outside of a major city. The majority of my students qualify for free and reduced price lunch, and we have to find creative ways to supply what we need for projects and activities. Many of my students come from limited life experiences and many have never traveled outside of the metropolitan area.
Our student population is very diverse.
They come from a variety of races and religions, and many speak more than one language.
My Project
My project is to make breakout boxes for my classroom. Breakout boxes require the students to work together to "break-in" to a box using a combination of locks. Clues are hidden throughout the room and in resources that the students are given.
I plan on hiding the clues in primary source documents that relate to our study of American history.
By analyzing the documents in a fun way the students will be more likely to really examine the documents for meaning.
These breakout boxes can be reused for every unit we are studying. My hope is that we can get enough of the materials that the boxes can be used with a small group where each student has a chance to help solve the puzzle.
