Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the excitement of making a new friend? What about if that friend was someone who lived in another country, who had more in common with you than you ever imagined?
My students are very open-minded and have a hunger for learning about other cultures and people.
They have a great appreciation for diversity and want to make a difference in the global society in which we live.
My students have had little experience with people and cultures outside of our city. Many of them have never even had the opportunity to go to other places in our state that are close by. They are extremely excited by this project.
My Project
This project makes a huge difference in the lives of these students. They start by communicating with their penpal through the Internet at the beginning of the school year. They are required to use French with any communication, verbally and written, while their penpal communicates in English. The impact in their outlook of their own world, their maturity level and understanding of others changes dramatically!
The goal is to promote better language and cultural understanding for both the Americans and the French.
My students learn to dispel the cultural stereotypes and myths they have heard throughout their lives. All the students participate in everyday family activities, go to school with their penpal, and go to places that teach them about the history and culture of the area. Students learn that while people have differences, they are also very similar. The best feeling is when they return home and maintain contact with their penpal, for many years to come!
One day during the experience, students will go together to Paris and get to experience the typical things like the Eiffel tower and have lunch in a cafe.
