Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Social Studies to 130 eighth graders at one of the largest middle schools in the state of New Mexico. Almost half the student population receives free or reduced lunch due to economic need, and about 70% of the student body was on the honor roll last semester.
My students are motivated and hardworking, and I enjoy creating new and engaging learning experiences for them.
Recently our Language Arts test scores have dropped. By supporting my project you will be helping me to create a learning opportunity for my students that will help history come alive, and strengthen their literacy skills at the same time.
My Project
I am requesting a class set of the novel "Chains" by Laurie Halse Anderson, and the audio CD. This book tells the story of a thirteen-year-old girl name Isabel and her struggle to escape slavery during the Revolutionary War.
As a Social Studies teacher I am excited to include a historical fiction to my lessons.
I believe that my students understanding of the time period will be deeper and more authentic thanks to the connections they create with the characters in the story. Also reading this novel and completing the lessons and projects will help my students to improve their literacy skills, which are essential for life long success.
