Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 5th and 6th grade Gifted and Talented students come to my class from a range of backgrounds and demographics, specifically as a school serving about a 65% economically disadvantaged population. But more importantly they have varied personalities and interests. Anime, sports, writing, video games, reading, musicals, cats, Fortnite, and TikTok are just some of the interests my students have indulged in, in my last 6 years of teaching. And I have yet to teach a student that is exactly the same as another.
"I can do hard things" is one of the first things my students learn to internalize as they grow their mindsets in my classroom.
I truly believe in the power of mind over matter so I want each student to believe he/she is capable of doing hard things. When my students instill this belief, they find that they can meet my high expectations that I have for each of them.
My Project
Breakout EDU is an immersive learning games platform with physical kits that require students to work collaboratively to find codes to break out of their kit using content knowledge to answer questions/ riddles.
"The Breakout EDU game library offers hundreds of standards-aligned games in a variety of subjects and topics while students practice 4C and SEL skills while working together to solve academic puzzles" -Breakout EDU.
The online platform element will allow me to assign games to my students when needed whether they are with me or we are together virtually.
I am looking to use the Breakout Edu Kits to provide my gifted students a fun and unique way for them to engage in content, strengthen critical thinking skills, and build their efficacy as members of a team. The online platform of this product can provide virtual access to my students to allow more students to participate at one time if I cannot accommodate a class due to the ratio of kits to students. In addition, I want to share this resource with other teachers on my campus to utilize with their students.
