Help us break out of the box! When you think of the typical art classroom of the 1950s and today, art students' creative space is confined to a 9x12" sheet of drawing paper. The 21st Century Learner demands a new approach to the art-making process that is capable of breaking into the 3rd Dimension.
My school is a high poverty school populated with numerous minority students who do not have the disposable income to fund individual art supplies.
Also, many of our students come from military families where one or more parents is currently overseas. As a result, the vast majority of my students are living with one parent. Students do not have the ability to purchase these materials on their own, nor the proper supervision to use them without an adult. It could easily be said that the students at my school are being raised and conditioned by the teachers significantly more than their parents.
My Project
With access to spray paint and glue guns, students will be able to create found art assemblages using any material they encounter. Students in my classroom have been working on various projects using spray paint in order to tap into the popular graffiti culture. Art students have channeled their graffiti impulses on their own artwork in ways that are positive and engage higher order thinking skills. Spray paint and glue guns would open the doors to the 3rd dimension so that my students can begin building outside of the 9x12" box.
Opening up the possibilities for students to think outside the box and create artwork in the 3rd dimension will affect students for years to come.
The thrill and excitement visible while students are constructing assemblage is an incredible thing to witness and I wish that for all my students.
