Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students would benefit greatly from reading a weekly magazine about current events in science, math, and other subjects.
It is a public school located in a major city in California with more than 80% of the students receiving free and/or reduced school lunch.
These students love to read, but sometimes do not have readily available access to current news. They are curious, excited to learn, and dream of a bright future.
My Project
The Scholastic News Readers will help my students to stay current with news that affects them and the world around them. The articles in the magazine will motivate my students to read about interesting and relevant topics that are important. Also, they will be able to take these magazines home to share with their families.
The Scholastic News weekly readers are Common Core aligned, and we will use them every week to improve our reading comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary while having fun! This donation will allow students to make connections between science, social studies, and the world around them.
Upper elementary students are now reading to learn instead of learning to read.
This critical time period will establish if a child becomes a lover of reading or not. By providing weekly Scholastic Magazine, my students will be motivated to read because of the exciting articles, news infographics, colorful maps, graphs, and charts. These weekly magazines are colorful and full of interesting facts!
