I teach third grade in a wonderfully diverse, inner city public school. In my class alone, there are over ten countries and languages represented. Many of my students are new to the country and are beginning to master the English language. All of my students come to school each day ready and motivated to learn.
Despite their many differences, my students work hard together, motivating and inspiring each other to do their best.
We are facing many budget cuts and my kids do not always have the supplies and resources they deserve. I do my best to buy, gather and trade for the things they need, but there is only so much I can do alone. Together, we can make a true difference.
My Project
These magazines will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy. I read on the carpet to them, they complete work there and they read independently! All of these magazines have been chosen with my students in mind. I have watched them the past few weeks of school read titles just like these. I have also asked them what type of magazines they would enjoy reading. Students will be able to choose these magazines, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.
With these new magazines, my students will be able to choose from a variety of topics that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level, pace themselves and choose stories of interest.
My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
