I teach amazing students who have severe/ profound disabilities. Often and unfortunately, people limit what students with disabilities are capable of doing. While they may be limited in some aspects, there is a means of helping them attain their goals and beyond. Imagine being limited.
My students disabilities range from cerebral palsy, autism, Down's syndrome and other cognitive and health impairments.
Along with the aforementioned disabilities, I have many students that also exhibit socio-emotional issues. Despite each students disability, they all possess great strengths and a knack for learning. Each one has their own individual personality that make them special and wonderful in their own way. Some are funny and enjoy dancing and catching bubbles, while others are tech savvy and try to new ways to navigate the technology we have available. Although most of my students are non-verbal, we find other ways of communicating, mostly through the use of pictures, symbols and gesturing. My school is a public school in which we have a small special education population in the midst of a very large general education population.
My students need full range access to learning life skills they can use in and outside of the classroom that might make life a little easier for themselves, their parents and caregivers. Such as, learning appropriate personal care, grooming and hygiene, microwaving simple foods, safety in the community, household chores etc. To aide in achieving these goals, my students need large print money that will help them with money identification and use. For my students that require particular sensory stimulus and a quiet space to calm down, they need a rainbow light and quiet room divider. My students also need a look and cook microwave curriculum that will help them learn how to safely make simple foods as they try to foster independence as much as possible per the individual. My students also need a survival signs kit so they may become aware of different signs and their purposes in the community such as the "walk" and "stop" signs.
Donations to this project will help improve my class in many ways.
It will allow my students to have access to learning the life skills they need to the greatest extent possible per each individual. The donation to my classroom will also help my students cope with socio-emotional issues and sensory needs. It will change my students lives for the better by giving them real-world exposure to everyday life skills and affording them the opportunity to feel safe and nurtured in my classroom.
