After being a teacher for 6 years and teaching upper Elementary in fourth and fifth grade, an opportunity came to teach second grade. I jumped on it and will never go back to upper grades again! Second Grade is where my heart is at and it has to do with the students that I am lucky enough to teach! I have a class of 25 students there are 15 boys and 10 girls. I teach in a school district of nine elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. What makes my teaching job even more special is that I am teaching in the district that I attended growing up. Coming to work everyday is such an honor with this class of students. At my school we follow " PAW POWER" where we Practice safety, Own responsibility, Work together, Empathize, and Respect! And in my classroom all 25 of my students show these key characteristics each day.
Second grade is such an important year developmentally in all subject areas!
I love the fire that my students have when they come to school each day. They are the most thoughtful, willing, and driven group of students I have ever taught!
My Project
After doing a lot of research on the importance of teaching students to love reading, I have come up with the idea of a Breakfast Book Club.
One of the most important ways children can gain a lifelong love for reading is by seeing an adult that they love and look up to reading in front of them.
This concept of having children see adults reading is what is driving my project. Students, parents and their teacher will all read a chapter book and then come together to eat breakfast and discuss the book! Students will be able to take home a copy of a pre-selected chapter book and are given one month to complete reading the book. The student along with the parent is required to read the chapter book and complete a short worksheet that goes along. After everyone has read the book will be meet together as a group and eat our breakfast and discuss our love for the book and reading.
I have carefully selected the chapter books for this project based on their ability to be engaging to all my students. Second graders are at such a pivotal stage in their reading journeys and finding an engaging chapter book for a second grader can be hard for parents, that is why I have taken over that task and picked some great books.
Building a positive reading environment at home and at school is one of the many benefits of this project! These books will help continue the amazing journey of learning to love reading for my second graders.
