Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The library at our school is working hard to encourage our students to learn for the fun of it! Our recently redesigned campus is currently in its third year as a girls' school. One of our district initiatives is to focus on the Whole Child Approach. We see our students as young woman leaders, and are working to ensure they maintain a positive attitude every day.

As our creed suggests, our girls are "innovative and creative," and we recognize the importance of being "of strong mind, body, and spirit." Every day, we are pushing our students to reach the next level in their learning journey, and we recognize the stress that can come with it.

The goal of this project is to provide our students with creative outlets to relieve this stress, while still promoting active learning experiences.

My Project

The goal of this project is to make the most of students' down time with Maker Centers. Every day after eating lunch, many girls come in to the library to read, use computers, or catch up with friends. These activities are encouraged, and the library would like to add other creative options for a wider audience.

These centers will promote creativity, problem-solving, technology use, and provide our students with stress relief with various Maker activities.

The puzzle, colored pencils, coloring map, and two origami paper kits will promote creative exploration. These activities provide students with an opportunity to focus on the moment, pulling them away from any anxieties they might be feeling. Research shows that these activities promote brain health because they require focus, hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, and problem solving skills.

The poetry creation station with magnetic poetry, will encourage students to express themselves creatively while also building their vocabulary--the tiles selected as part of this grant are double sided. One side displays a familiar word, while the other shows an advanced synonym. On some occasions, students will be challenged to create poetry based on topics of their choosing. On others, they might be asked to create poetry in response to a posted image or quote. There are so many activities to keep this station fresh and fun!

The Sphero robots we are requesting will be a new activity for many of our students. Our campus has some incredible teachers who are successfully teaching engineering courses, and the library would like to support those interests. Girls will be developing their skills in coding at some of our planned library centers, and the robots would be an awesome way to see their work in action! These robots are quick, and the nubby covers will help keep them protected.
