My Students

My amazing 7th-grade middle school students come from diverse economic, social and racial backgrounds. Each year I learn so much from my kids! I love their watching them learn about their passions and how to navigate the world of middle school.

We fight a growing impoverished community that cannot financially afford our students the opportunity to go beyond their own backyards; their experiences are expanded only by what we can bring into the classroom.

Though we are in a community that is booming economically, the students I serve still struggle to have needs met. Purchasing basic supplies or even books for reading is not always an easy task for the families of these students I serve. A large number of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many of the kiddos do not have access to technology at home and I work to provide this in the classroom, so they do not have to stress over this along with the other possibly struggles.

Despite these struggles, these kiddos brighten my room every day with smiles and an eagerness to find their passions and travel along their own JOURNEY!

My Project

Kids love to work in game mode, solve the next clue, reach the next level and win the game!! These Breakout EDU activities provide hands-on learning modules and materials that will be used to incorporate non-fiction informational and procedural text with code breaking, mystery solving and critical thinking and collaboration. My 7th grade reading students are going to BREAKOUT of the old school "sit and get" activities and harness this gaming passion with hands-on problem-solving! We will use Breakout Edu materials locks and different kinds of boxes to engage students in reading activities of that lead them to solve clues that lead them to another group or box and another clue. Students will have to read and decipher codes to open a box or device in order to receive a clue that gives the group one piece of a larger picture to complete a learning task!

We will use this in our reading class to incorporate critical thinking and real-world reading to solve the mystery and BREAKOUT of boredom!

These 21st learning skills will have my students so engaged that they will not even realize they are practicing critical reading skills--they will be having fun and bragging about it to their classmates!
