Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are at-risk, potential dropouts (or in some cases, dropouts) who have come to my school seeking an alternative way to receive their diploma. When they come to me for STAAR test prep, I only have a month to work with them, and they are all in various places with regard to their content knowledge. Some are currently in the course, some took it last year, some several years ago. They all need to take and pass the STAAR U.S. History test to graduate.
For a month before the test, I work intensively with them on what they need to know to pass.
I basically teach the entire year-long U.S. History class in a month. On the last day before they test, I keep them all day to play games and review the concepts they have learned. Over the years, this game day has proven instrumental to my students' success.
My Project
I work at a campus with students who are self-paced and need one-on-one support. Every fall and spring, I do small group sessions to prepare students for the STAAR tests. These sessions are particularly challenging because for many of my students, it's been some time since they took US History and they don't remember the material. I get 4 weeks to teach them everything they need to know.
The funds from this project will be used to create dynamic, engaging review games for my students.
I want to use these games to review vocabulary, important people, court cases, and amendments they need to know for the STAAR test. I plan to create a blog about the experience in order to help inspire other teachers to create engaging review games for their students.
